Big Boost for Maroubra Building Supplies as Demand Rises
A key element of any construction project is ensuring materials are delivered on time and without issues to the correct site.
As Australia’s construction boom continues with the growing population, Sydney-based Maroubra Building Supplies (MBS) is adapting to this increased demand with reliable equipment and technology that can handle the task.
Founded in 1983 by Sam Papadakis, MBS began as a hardware store before shifting focus to bulk material supply in the late 1990s due to the rise of big-box homeware retailers.
Today, under the leadership of Managing Director Louie Papadakis, the family business has rebranded as MBS Building & Landscape, with a purpose-built facility in Matraville opened in 2019.
To stand out from other suppliers, MBS is taking a unique approach by using crane trucks to deliver materials instead of traditional tipper trucks. This helps reduce congestion on building sites and surrounding streets.
MBS’s fleet features Isuzu twin-steer FYJ 300-350 models in 8x4 and 10x4 configurations, allowing for greater flexibility in delivery, regardless of the job size or location.
“Our location near Port Botany means we deliver all across Sydney, from the Western suburbs to the Northern Beaches, Eastern suburbs, and even the city’s historic areas,” said Louie. “Our crane trucks make it possible to unload materials, even in tight or tricky spots, ensuring builders get exactly what they need.”
MBS uses a mix of HMF Cranes and Palfinger cranes, offering up to 31 metres of reach, to deliver materials such as soil, mulch, and building products straight to the required spot on site.
After trying out various truck brands, MBS formed a strong partnership with Isuzu dealer Suttons Trucks Arncliffe, who recommended the Isuzu FYJ 300-350 for its heavy-duty applications.
The FYJ 300-350 features a GVM of 30,000 kg and a GCM of 45,000 kg, with a second steer axle that ensures stable load sharing. It also includes airbag rear suspension and a 6-speed Allison 4430 auto transmission, making it a reliable and durable choice for MBS.
"The FYJ is a tough, dependable vehicle. Isuzu is known for its durability, and Suttons and Isuzu’s support has been outstanding,” Louie added.
As MBS phases out some older trucks, they plan to replace them with smaller Isuzu models, making operations and maintenance more streamlined.
With their new FYJ crane trucks, MBS is confident they’ll continue providing efficient service, without compromising the safety of workers on-site.
“MBS has adapted to the rapid expansion of the building industry,” said Louie. “This is the future of professional businesses like ours. We’re able to deliver exactly where our customers need it, whether it’s bulk bags of soil for a gardener or multiple materials for a large project.”
With customers across Sydney, from the Central Coast to Wollongong, MBS is anticipating further growth, including an expansion of their wholesale division, Australian Sands.
“Our success depends on understanding industry trends and staying ahead of what customers need. Our relationship with Isuzu is central to our growth and future plans,” Louie concluded.
